RAMKUMAR KANNADASAN

self image.jpg

Ramkumar Kannadasan is a sculptor and interdisciplinary artist based in Chennai, India. Working with a variety of processes including, drawings, stone, metals, wood, terracotta, and ceramics, his projects take shape through knowledge, skill, and rigor in working with materials and manipulation to create form.

Ramkumar grew up in rural India and he draws from his childhood environment and surroundings with a constant preoccupation with nature and animals. He explores nature through distance and destruction, and the great removal of nature caused by humans over time.  He sees his art as a way of registering these changing relationships in the environment using materials from the environment in the present time. Most recently, Ramkumar’s themes revolve around animals and human relationships to power, love, and dependence. This body of artwork expresses his concern and challenges the viewers to think and weigh the inevitable consequences of human exploits on animals and nature as a whole.

In tandem with his artistic practice, Ramkumar works as an art educator and designer for architecture and interiors. He holds an MFA from the College Of Art, University of Delhi, India, and a BFA  from Govt. College of Fine Arts, Chennai, India. He is a recent recipient of the Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarship, British Council in 2022-23.
